A Guide to Organizing Vue Js: Dividing 'methods', 'data', 'computed', and More into Separate JavaScript Files

Is it feasible to separate methods, data, computed properties, etc. into individual .js files and then import them into a component.vue file?

I prefer not to include all JavaScript logic in a single .vue component.

My ideal code organization for each component would look like this:

myComponent/
      component.vue
      methods.js
      data.js
      computed.js
      etc..

Then in component.vue:

methods: ()=> from './methods.js'

I attempted using module exports but encountered issues.

Answer №1

To incorporate the objects and functions, simply encapsulate them in export statements and then import them within the component.

// methods.js
export default {
  myMethod () {
    console.log('a');
  }
}
// data.js
export default function () {
  return {
  }
}
// computed.js
export default {
  myVariable() {
    return '';
  }
}
// component.vue
import methods from './methods';
import data from './data';
import computed from './computed';

export default {
  ...methods,
  ...data,
  ...computed
}

Answer №2

If you're looking to streamline your code, I suggest utilizing mixins.

Mixins offer a robust solution for managing externalized code, eliminating the need to scatter logic across multiple files like data.js and methods.js.

By consolidating all related logic into a single file (mixin), you can easily inject it into your component or reuse it across several components.

Notably, mixins maintain the standard Vue.js lifecycle method functionality.

mymixin.js

export default {
  data() {
    return {
      myData: ''
    }
  },
  methods: { ... },
  created() { ... },
  mounted() { ... },
  etc...
}
