Achieving Perfect Alignment for Absolutely Positioned Divs in

I'm currently facing an issue where the image I'm trying to center horizontally also moves the parent div downward when I try to vertically center it using top-margin. This is not the desired outcome.

If you'd like to see what I mean, I've attached a screenshot of the problem: Here.

One possible solution could be setting the image position to absolute, but then I encounter difficulties in horizontal centering.

<div id="header">
    <div id="container">
        <div id="logo">
            <a href="index.html"><img src="images/logo.png" /></a>
        </div>
    </div>
</div>

#container {
    width: 960px;
    margin: 0 auto;
    position: relative;
}

#logo {
    height: 96px;
    width: 484px;
    margin: 50px auto;
}

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Answer №1

You can apply the overflow: hidden property to the #container. This will create a new block formatting context, preventing margin collapse.

Answer №2

Based on my observation, the container remains in its original position without any downward movement (which is appropriate), while only the logo shifts downwards due to the margin applied.

If you want to center the image within the header area, you can set a fixed height for the header and utilize either margin or padding to achieve the desired alignment. However, if you prefer the header's height to be dynamic and adjustable, consider using the following CSS:

#container {
    width: 960px;
    margin: 0 auto;
    position: relative;
    vertical-align: middle;
    display: table-cell
}

I hope this information proves helpful!
