Altering the placement of a single element from floating to fixed positioning in CSS

Currently in the process of designing a basic website, I am looking to modify the behavior of the navigation bar on the left-hand side. I want it to remain fixed in its position so that users can scroll through the page without losing sight of it.

My main concern is whether there is a way to change the positioning of the navigation bar to 'fixed' without causing disruptions to the rest of my layout. I will provide a link to an image of the website along with the corresponding HTML and CSS code for reference.

Additionally, I'm curious why there are discrepancies in how the website appears when viewed in different browsers, particularly across various resolutions. I have been using Google Chrome but noticed differences when testing in other browsers despite specifying pixel values in the design.

EDIT 2
I have included screenshots from the website displaying variations in appearance across different browsers and screen resolutions. The initial design was optimized for Google Chrome on a laptop with a resolution of 1600x900, while inconsistencies arose when viewed on a device with a resolution of 1440x900. Any adjustments made to the window size resulted in further issues, urging me to avoid zooming in future tests. Visit this gallery containing 8 images for comparisons:

Answer №1

To achieve the desired effect of "floating" the menu on the left side without altering the existing HTML code significantly, you can simply insert a new div with the same styling as your .sidearea element (matching width, height, etc) but containing no content except to serve as a placeholder. Then, adjust the CSS for the .sidearea class to include position:fixed.

The compatibility issue across different web browsers may present challenges related to custom font availability, default browser CSS settings, and other factors. Resolving these discrepancies typically involves addressing each specific issue individually.

Answer №2

Feel free to experiment with this CSS code: position:fixed;top:10%;left:4%;. Customize the values for 'top' and 'left' based on your requirements. Here's an example: Try it out in FIDDLE

Remember, you can adjust the 'top' and 'left' values to suit your specific needs.
