Calculating the total length of an SVG element using React

Looking to animate an SVG path using React (similar to how it's done in traditional JavaScript: https://css-tricks.com/svg-line-animation-works/), but struggling when the path is created using JSX. How can I find the total length of the path in this scenario? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

React's refs come in handy, especially when working with SVG elements. Check out more information on this link.

When creating an SVG, you can set a ref on a path element and then access that reference to call getTotalLength().

<svg><path ref="path"> </svg>

If the function is part of your React component, you can simply do:

var path = this.refs.path;
var pathLength = path.getTotalLength()

In ES6, string refs are being deprecated, so it's recommended to use arrow functions like this:

    <svg><path ref={(ref) => this.path = ref}> </svg>

Both methods work, but using arrow functions is preferred. If you follow this method, you won't need to call this.refs.path, just use this.path to access the DOM node.
