Can I pass a variable to the data() option of a Vue composition API component?

After defining a variable in the setup function:

 setup(props, context) {

        let name = "Tommy";
    }

How can this variable be accessed and used within the component?

data() {
    return {
      myName: name
    }
  },

The variable is accessible in the template but not within any of the component methods. This remains the case even if it is placed in the onMounted hook.

setup(props, context) {

    onMounted(() => {
    let name = "Tommy";
    }
}

Answer №1

When working with the option API versus the composition API in Vue.js, it's important to note that exchanging properties and methods between the two APIs is not recommended. In your scenario, a better approach would be to define a property within the setup hook and expose it to the template like this:

import {ref} from 'vue'

 setup(props, context) {
      const name = ref("Tommy");

  return{
    myName:name
   }

}

Answer №2

One can utilize it within the component, and also within the data option:

data() {
    return {
      myname: this.name
    }
}

However, keep in mind that myname will not automatically update when name changes.

Answer №3

It is important to note that when you need to update the value of a variable within the setup method, if the variable was initialized as a "ref", you must explicitly access the .value member.

import {ref} from 'vue'

 setup(props, context) {
      const name = ref("Tommy");
      const fullName = name.value + " Hanks";

  return{
    myName:name,
    fullName
   }

}

When working in the template, there is no need to directly access the value of the ref returned by the setup method. Simply use the ref element, as the .value will be accessed implicitly in the template.
