Checking JavaScript files with TSLint

After spending many hours attempting to make this work, I still haven't had any success...

I am wondering: How can I utilize TSLint for a .js file?

The reason behind this is my effort to create the best possible IDE for developing numerous JavaScript scripts that are used in our internal software.

Here's what I envision:

  • I have meticulously documented TypeScript function definitions that I want to implement in a .js file.
  • I aim to import a .js file and detect any errors it may contain. While TSLint can provide type checking on .ts files based on .d.ts files, JSHint/ESLint can only recognize function names and parameters from .d.ts files when dealing with .js files. This falls short of providing complete type checking in .js, which I find crucial.
  • I plan to use JSHint/ESLint alongside TSLint simultaneously. By leveraging the strengths of both tools (TSLint for types, JSHint/ESLint for other aspects), I hope to create an effective combination.
  • I want to prevent the use of TypeScript keywords in JavaScript code.
  • I also want autocomplete support in .js files based on .d.ts files, which currently works well.

I am proficient in coding with VSCode, Sublime, and NetBeans.

If you have any suggestions or ideas, I would greatly appreciate them! Thank you!

It is worth mentioning that a few years later, TSLint was officially deprecated. It is no longer recommended for use. Its replacement and successor is typescript-eslint.

typescript-eslint is designed to work seamlessly with .js files by default. For beginners, the typescript-eslint Getting Started docs provide a helpful starting point. If you wish to implement typed rules on .js files, it is possible but may require additional configuration.
