Choose the "toolbar-title" located within the shadow root of ion-title using CSS

Within Ionic, the ion-title component contains its content wrapped in an additional div inside the shadow-dom. This particular div is designated with the class .toolbar-title. How can I target this div using a SCSS selector to modify its overflow behavior?

I have attempted various approaches, such as:

.toolbar-title { ... }
ion-title .toolbar-title
ion-title::shadow .toolbar-title { ... }
ion-title::shadow(div) { ... }

Along with many other combinations involving :host and ::ng-deep selectors.

Additionally, it's worth noting that both ::shadow and ng-deep are considered deprecated.

While Ionic has introduced CSS variables for certain purposes, unfortunately they do not cover the overflow property.

Thank you in advance!

Answer №1

The shadowDOM concept restricts external CSS manipulation of its content.

However, being an open shadowDOM allows for JavaScript modifications.

document.querySelector("ion-title")
        .shadowRoot
        .querySelector(".toolbar-title")
        .style
        .overflow = "initial";

With Ionic v6, you have the ability to target and edit shadowDOM contents using CSS. Check out https://ionicframework.com/docs/theming/css-shadow-parts

Just keep in mind that the element within the shadowDOM that you wish to select must have a part attribute available. For example, the ion-select element:

<ion-select>
  #shadow-root
  <div part="placeholder" class="select-text select-placeholder"></div>
  <div part="icon" class="select-icon"></div>
</ion-select>

To select the placeholder element, use this CSS code:

ion-select::part(placeholder) {
  color: blue;
  opacity: 1;
}

It is important to note that the ion-title element does not provide any shadow parts. To make modifications, you will need to enclose the content of the ion-title in a container:

<ion-title>
  <div class="content">
    <img src="..." />
    Hello World!
  </div>
</ion-title>

Here's the corresponding CSS for the container:

.content {
  display: flex;
  align-items: center;
}
