"Create a div element with resizable capabilities, similar to a

Is it possible to resize elements like divs in browsers without using jQuery or other libraries like draggable or resizable? I know text-areas can be resized by default, but I'm curious if this functionality can be extended to other elements through pure HTML/CSS. Are there any CSS rules that can achieve this effect for a div?

If you have an alternative solution, I'm open to hearing about it.

Answer №1

To enable resizing of elements, you can utilize the css3 property known as resize.

div {
    resize: both;
}

You also have the option to use resize: horizontal or resize: vertical for specific direction resizing.

Do keep in mind that cross-browser compatibility may be limited regarding this feature. For more information, visit http://caniuse.com/#feat=css-resize.

Answer №2

To achieve this effect, you can utilize CSS3. By adjusting the resize and overflow styles, you can create a div tag that is resizable by the user. In the example below, both horizontal and vertical resizing are enabled:

.resizableBox {
  background: rgba(255, 0, 0, 0.2);
  font-size: 2em;
  border: 1px solid black;
  overflow: hidden;
  resize: both;
  width: 160px;
  height: 120px;
  min-width: 120px;
  min-height: 90px;
  max-width: 400px;
  max-height: 300px;
}
<div class="resizableBox">The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.</div>
