Creating dynamic div containers on the fly

I'm dealing with an issue in my application where multiple overlapping div boxes are being dynamically generated and they all end up having the same content. When I add content to a box, it gets applied to all existing boxes instead of just the last one created.

The method I use involves appending the content div to the class selector ".box" since using IDs is not feasible due to their uniqueness requirement on a page. How can I ensure that the content is only added to the latest box created?

What would be the best approach to address this problem?

// This is the function responsible for adding content to the new box:

var box = $('<div/>', {
    'class': 'imgDiv',
}).appendTo('.box');

...

Answer №1

In case the most recent .box element is the final one on the page, you have the option to perform the following:

var box = $('<div/>', {
    'class': 'imgDiv',
}).appendTo( $('.box').last() );

However, the use of var box = may be slightly confusing. If you are generating the new box within the same code section, it would be more efficient to keep a reference to that newly created box and append any content to it.

Answer №2

When you add to the .box selector, it will target all elements with the box tag. To specifically target one box, you need to adjust your selection!

var newBox = $('<div/>', {
    'class': 'imgDiv',
}).appendTo('#my_specific_box');

Alternatively, you can use a pseudo selector to target the last box:

var newBox = $('<div/>', {
    'class': 'imgDiv',
}).appendTo('.box:last');

Answer №3

If you want to assign unique IDs to each box, one approach is to use a counter and update the id attribute for each box using jQuery, like this: .attr('id','box-' + counter).

Answer №4

One way to achieve this is by using the :last modifier. Here's an example that demonstrates how to do it: http://jsfiddle.net/ayezutov/ZsBgY/2/

 $("#append").click(function(e){
    $("<div>appended</div>").appendTo(".box:last");
    e.preventDefault();
 });
