Customize the appearance of parent components based on the content of their child elements

I am currently working on a component that contains multiple instances, each with its own unique internal component (acting as a modal wrapper). I need to customize the size of each modal instance independently. How can I achieve this customization when the styling is applied from the child component itself?

For one modal:

:host ::ng-deep {
  .modal-dialog {
    width:300px;
  }
}

For the other modal:

:host ::ng-deep {
    .modal-dialog {
      width:600px;
      background:none;
      padding:2px;
    }
}

Answer №1

In order to ensure full compatibility across all browsers, CSS styling should only be applied downward and not upward.

As a result, a child component cannot dictate the styles of its parent element.

However, it is possible to set a minimum width on the wrapper container (e.g. 300px), while allowing the width to adjust automatically (you can also specify a maximum width if necessary).

By setting specific sizes for the children elements within the wrapper, the container will dynamically adjust its width based on the size of its children.

Answer №2

If you want to style each child component differently, consider assigning a specific class to each one and then utilizing the :has() pseudo class on the parent element

.modal-dialog {
  height: 100px;
  border: 1px solid red;
  padding: 2px;
}

.modal-dialog:has(.width1) {
  width: 100px;
}

.modal-dialog:has(.width2) {
  width: 200px;
}
<div class="modal-dialog">
  <div class="width1"></div>
</div>
<div class="modal-dialog">
  <div class="width2"></div>
</div>
