Delete an <li> element upon clicking a span tag

I've been attempting to fadeOut some <li> elements, however I haven't had any success. Here's my code below:

<li class="lclass" id="1">
    First Li
    <span class="removeit" id="1" style="color:#C00;">Remove</span>
</li>
<li class="lclass" id="2">
    First Li
    <span class="removeit" id="2" style="color:#C00;">Remove</span>
</li>
<li class="lclass" id="3">
    First Li
    <span class="removeit" id="3" style="color:#C00;">Remove</span>
</li>

Currently, only the span class="removeit" fades out when clicked. My goal is to fade out the entire div when the remove button is pressed.

$(document).ready(function() {
    $('.removeit').click(function () {
        $(this).hide("fast");
    });
});

Thank you!

Answer №1

Implement .parent() or .closest('li') to access the parent li element and then conceal the entire object in this manner:

 $(document).ready(function() {
   $('.removeit').click(function () {
     $(this).parent().hide("fast");  //or $(this).closest('li').hide("fast");
   });
 });

See it in action here

Answer №2

To obtain the parent li element in your situation, you can utilize either .parent() or .closest(). After that, you can utilize fadeOut to fade out the corresponding li:

$('.removeit').click(function () {
    $(this).closest('li').fadeOut();
});

Check out this Fiddle Demo

Add classes instead of ids because they are unique:

<li class="lclass 1">
<span class="removeit 1" style="color:#C00;">

Moreover, avoid using numbers as ids. Instead, go for names like li1, li2, span1, span2...

<li class="lclass span1">
<span class="removeit span1" style="color:#C00;">
