Element cannot be located using XPath Selector for a text type without a corresponding name or Id

An Example in C#

IWebElement Search =
   driver.FindElement(By.XPath("//*[@placeholder='search' and
   @type='text']"));
       Actions actions_Search = new Actions(driver);
       actions_Search.MoveToElement(Search).Click().SendKeys("ABCDEFG").Perform();

Answer №1

To verify if there is a unique entry in the HTML DOM, please use the following method:

The xpath to check is as follows:

//input[contains(@class,'searchbox') and @placeholder='search' @type='text']

Here are the steps to check:

Open Google Chrome -> navigate to the element section -> perform a CTRL + F search -> paste the xpath and look for the highlighted element with 1/1 matching node.

If you find a unique entry with 1/1 match, you can utilize the following code snippet :

IWebElement elem = driver.FindElement(By.Xpath("//input[contains(@class,'searchbox') and @placeholder='search' @type='text']")).SendKeys("ABCDEFG");

It may not be clear why an action class is required for this specific scenario.

Answer №2

If you are unable to locate an element by its xpath, it may be because it is contained within a different iframe on the webpage.

To check the location of the element in the browser's top-level element using code (in Chrome console), use the following command:

$x("//input")

If the element is still not found, switch to a different iframe as shown in this image: https://i.stack.imgur.com/SuKfx.png

Remember to update your code to include the iframe switch.
