"Enhance Your Website with Various Hover Effects Using CSS across Multiple Elements

Has anyone experienced trouble with making the hover effect work in my onHover class and applying a display effect to span.box? Any ideas on how to fix this?

.onHover {
  display: block;
  width: 200px;
  height: 20px;
  background: green;
}
.onHover:hover + span.box {
  width: 300px;
  height: 20px;
  background: lightgray;
  margin: 10px 0;
}
<div class="onHover">
  <span class="box"></span>
  <span class="image"></span>
</div>

Answer №1

The issue lies in the fact that you are applying it to an inline element. You should adjust the display property for the span instead. Additionally, the + selector is meant for selecting siblings, not children. To fix this, either remove it or replace it with >:

.onHover {
  display: block;
  width: 200px;
  height: 20px;
  background: green;
}
.onHover:hover span.box {
  width: 300px;
  height: 20px;
  background: lightgray;
  margin: 10px 0;
  display: inline-block;
}
<div class="onHover">
  <span class="box"></span>
  <span class="image"></span>
</div>

The width and height properties can only be set for elements that have a block or inline-block display.

Answer №2

In addition to eliminating the + symbol, which serves as the adjacent sibling selector, in this case, the span element functions as a child.

The :hover pseudo-class will not be effective since the span is being displayed as an inline element.

.onHover {
  display: block;
  width: 200px;
  height: 20px;
  background: green;
}
.onHover:hover span.box {
  width: 300px;
  height: 20px;
  background: lightgray;
  margin: 10px 0;
  display:block
}
<div class="onHover">
  <span class="box"></span>
  <span class="image"></span>
</div>

Answer №3

To implement the hover effect, utilize the pseudo element :hover in the following manner

span.box: hover{width:300px; height:20px; background:lightgray; margin:10px 0;}
