Executing JavaScript code within ASP.NET Visual Basic

My current web application uses jQuery and JavaScript, but I want to add more features that are supported in ASP.net VB.

However, I am unsure if the JavaScript can run after the VB code.

Essentially, I would like the web app to follow this sequence:

  1. User enters the URL address

  2. ASP.net VB initializes within

    <script runat="server"></script>

  3. After initialization is complete, JavaScript runs within

    <script type="text/javascript"></script>

Is there a way for this sequence to be achieved?

Answer №1

It is important to understand the difference between server side and client side programming before diving into development. The VB or C# code runs on the Server Side, while JavaScript operates on the Client Side within the browser.

The proper approach involves:

  1. Creating the page on the server side and delivering it to the client.
  2. Allowing the client's browser to execute JavaScript using the OnLoad function.

Note: I suggest familiarizing yourself with JQuery as well for additional knowledge in this area.

Answer №2

Server/client setups usually operate in this manner as a default setting.

Languages like ASP.NET (and others on the server-side) essentially act as preprocessors. They analyze the client's request (such as querystring or form values), carry out certain tasks (like storing data in a database), modify some of the HTML content (such as personalized styles), and then send back a standard HTML page to the browser.

UPDATE: Just for clarification, VB code runs on the server side, while JavaScript executes once it reaches the client side. It is possible to run JavaScript within VB, but in most cases, this is 1. unnecessary, 2. inefficient, 3. unlikely to yield the expected outcomes.
