Exploring Angular Component Communication: Deciphering between @Input, @Output, and SharedService. How to Choose?

When a node on the tree is clicked, the data contained in that node is displayed on the right. In my situation, the node represents a folder and the data consists of the devices within that folder. The node component and the data display component are siblings.

Implementation:

  1. If we utilize @Input and @Output, we would need to create a chain involving 6 components to achieve this functionality.

  2. Alternatively, we could create a shared service using a subject which can be subscribed to from any component. This approach has the advantage of eliminating the need for a long chain of connections.

I am uncertain about whether to use @Input and @Output or a shared service for this task.

If anyone could provide insights on the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, or guide me on how to proceed, it would be greatly appreciated.

It is recommended to utilize a service for retrieving data that isn't coming directly from the parent or child components.

Your project may become disorganized if you continue using this pattern, passing unnecessary objects to parts of your program that don't require them. This approach could be considered a significant anti-pattern because not only will you be sending redundant data through multiple components, but you'll also need to make changes to all components simultaneously if you decide to modify the name of the object being passed around. This can lead to additional work and increased risk of errors.

By avoiding the use of service implementation, you would be violating a key design principle in Computer Science known as "Separation of Concerns" (which emphasizes 'doing one thing well'), since only 2 out of your 6 components actually require the passed data.

Furthermore, if another component suddenly needs the same data, you'd have to create an additional 'chain', potentially extending across more components that don't actually need the information. Whereas with a service, you can easily inject it and request the required data when necessary.
