Exploring the Document Object Model using jQuery

If the code snippet below represents a div element...

<!doctype html>
<div id="idea">
  <p class="news">hello world!</p>
  <p class="news">hello world!</p>
  <p class="news">hello world!</p>
  <p class="news">hello world!</p>
</div>

When using jQuery, how can I target the last p tag inside the div with id "idea" and change the content of the second p element with class "news"? My attempts so far have been unsuccessful:

  $(document).ready(function) {
    $('#idea:last').html("something else");
  }
  $(document).ready(function) {
    $('.newsbanner[1]').html("something else");
  }

Answer №1

One way to target elements is with the :nth-of-type() selector. For more information, take a look at this resource.

Answer №2

$('.news:nth-child(2)').html("change to different content");

This code snippet will update the HTML of the second ".news" element.

The previous attempt using an array was incorrect. Remember to declare the array first. If you need help with selecting elements in JavaScript, check out some useful nth-child recipes from CSS tricks.

Update:

// This code selects the second paragraph element inside the element with id "idea".
// It changes the text and also adds a new class.
$('#idea p:nth-child(2)').text('change to different content').addClass('someClass');
// This code selects the last paragraph element inside the element with id "idea".
$('#idea p:last-of-type').text('change to different content');
