Exploring the process of sending post data and navigating to a URL using AngularJS

I am working on an application using angularjs 1.6 and Java 8. My goal is to send POST data to another application and navigate to the URL that this external application determines.

The purpose of my application is to transmit data about a citizen who wants to schedule a service appointment. The other application takes this data, populates a form with all the necessary fields, and displays it to the user as requested.

I have experimented with various methods to achieve this, such as using xmlHttpRequest. However, I encountered an issue where, despite receiving a status code of 302 (redirect), the user's page was not actually redirected.

One possible solution I have attempted:

$http({
                method: "POST",
                headers: {
                    ...some headers...
                },
                data : someData,
                url: someExternalUrl
            })
            .then(function(response, headers) {
                // Retrieve the 'Location' header from the response
                var externalUrl = headers("Location");
                $window.location.href = externalUrl;
            },
            function(response) {
                // Handle failure
            });

Another attempt:

            var url = someUrl;
            var params = JSON.stringify(jsonObject);
            http.open('POST', url, true);

            // Include relevant header information in the request
            //http.setRequestHeader('Content-type', 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded');
            //Additional headers

            http.onreadystatechange = function() {//Execute a function when the state changes.
                if(http.readyState == 4 && http.status == 200) {
                    alert(http.responseText);
                }
            }
            http.send(params);

How can I successfully achieve this?

Thank you!

302 status code will not automatically redirect your browser if you are using xmlHttpRequest (or fetch). You must first retrieve the data and then set window.location = 'newUrlHere'; once your post call has been completed.

There are a couple of ways to achieve this:

  • If your POST method returns a 302 status, you can examine the headers, obtain the URL, and set the window location accordingly;
  • If your POST method returns an object or string in the response body containing the new location, simply extract it and use window.location = newLocation; to navigate to the desired page.
