Fixing a menu hover appearance

I recently encountered a small issue with the menu on my website. When hovering over a menu item, a sub-menu should appear. However, there seems to be a slight misalignment where the submenu appears a few pixels below the actual menu item.

Check out the website here:

The problem specifically occurs when hovering over the "What type of plane do you have?" option. If you move your mouse quickly, everything works fine. But if you move it slowly, the alignment issue becomes apparent.

Answer №1

The menu is located below the parent li by a specific number of pixels.

If there exists a small space between them, the hover effect may not work properly when moving over this gap.

To resolve this issue, simply adjust the top position from a fixed value to 100%.

.menu li:hover ul, .menu li.sfHover ul {
left: 0;
top: 100%; /* consistently positioned regardless of parent's height */
z-index: 9;
}

Answer №2

When displaying a submenu on :hover, it's important to account for the gap between the menu and submenu. If there is a gap and the mouse cursor enters it, the menu loses its :hover state and the submenu disappears. To fix this issue, adjust the top position to eliminate the gap and create a visual separation with padding-top:

.menu li:hover ul, .menu li.sfHover ul {
    left: 0;
    top: 28px; /* decrease top to remove the gap */
    z-index: 9;
    padding-top: 8px; /* create a new gap with padding-top */
}

UPDATE: It has been suggested by @Paulie_D to set the top position to 100% instead of using specific numbers. This approach eliminates any magic numbers. However, padding-top is still necessary to maintain a nice spacing between the menu and submenu. Combining both suggestions results in an ideal solution :)
