Focus on selecting the first child <li> element that contains an <a> tag within it

Struggling a bit with selecting only the first child within a li tag that contains a link.

HTML:

<ul class="dropdown-menu" role="menu" aria-expanded="true">
  <li role="presentation" class="dropdown-header">Label</li>
  <li><a href="#">Choose Me</a> </li>
</ul>

JavaScript:

dropdown.find('.dropdown-menu li:first-child a').focus();

In this scenario, it is unable to select beyond the list item labeled "Label".

Answer №1

To target a specific element in jQuery, you can utilize the eq method.

The eq method reduces the set of matched elements to the one at the specified index.

$('body').find('.dropdown-menu li a').eq(0).css('color','red');
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<ul class="dropdown-menu" role="menu" aria-expanded="true>
  <li role="presentation" class="dropdown-header">Label 1</li>
  <li role="presentation" class="dropdown-header">Label 2</li>
  <li role="presentation" class="dropdown-header">Label 3</li>
  <li><a href="#">Select Me</a> </li>
</ul>

Another approach is to use the :first pseudo-selector.

The :first selector narrows down the set of matched elements to the first one in the selection.

$('body').find('.dropdown-menu li a:first').css('color','red');

$('body').find('.dropdown-menu li a:first').css('color','red');
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<ul class="dropdown-menu" role="menu" aria-expanded="true>
  <li role="presentation" class="dropdown-header">Label</li>
  <li><a href="#">Select Me</a> </li>
</ul>

Additionally, you can use the $.each method to find and modify the color of the first li element that contains an anchor tag.

$('ul li').each(function(){
  if($(this).find('a').length>0){
    $(this).find('a').css('color','red');
    return false;
  }
});
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<ul class="dropdown-menu" role="menu" aria-expanded="true>
  <li role="presentation" class="dropdown-header">Label 1</li>
  <li role="presentation" class="dropdown-header">Label 2</li>
  <li role="presentation" class="dropdown-header">Label 3</li>
  <li><a href="#">Select Me</a> </li>
</ul>

Answer №2

How about using

$('.dropdown-menu > li > a').first()
instead?
