Guide to loading an image and incorporating it into a canvas using Gatsby's server-side rendering

I encountered an issue where I was unable to create an image using any of the supported types like CSSImageValue, HTMLImageElement, SVGImageElement, HTMLVideoElement, HTMLCanvasElement, ImageBitmap, or OffscreenCanvas in my SSR application with Gatsby.

Despite trying the canvas npm package and utilizing Canvas.Image to create an HTMLImageElement, I faced the same error as the Image constructor message.

The main error message I received was:

Context.js:225 Uncaught TypeError: Failed to execute 'drawImage' on 'CanvasRenderingContext2D': The provided value is not of type '(CSSImageValue or HTMLImageElement or SVGImageElement or HTMLVideoElement or HTMLCanvasElement or ImageBitmap or OffscreenCanvas)'

The code and error message from the canvas package were:

import { Image as CanvasImage } from 'canvas';

const image = new CanvasImage();
image.src = avatars[avatar];

console.log(image);
TypeError: canvas__WEBPACK_IMPORTED_MODULE_3__.Image is not a constructor

To address this, I utilized the react-konva package to draw canvas and images within it.

Answer №1

At long last, I have discovered the method to accomplish this task. I devised a function called getImage which will retrieve the image source from the canvas using the loadImage method along with a Promise:

import { loadImage } from 'canvas';

export async function getImage(src, callback) {
  return loadImage(src)
    .then((image) => image)
    .catch(error => console.log(error));
};

I then utilized this function in my component effortlessly:

let [imageSource, setImageSource] = useState();
useEffect(() => {
  getImage(ladderSvg)
    .then((image) => setImageSource(image))
} , []);
