How can I save a Flot chart as a PDF file?

After researching various sources such as a flot issue, a chart comparison, and an answer on Stack Overflow, it seems that exporting a flot chart to PDF may not be fully possible. However, I came across another guideline in this answer suggesting the use of html2canvas. Does anyone know if there is an AngularJS plugin available for this purpose?

Can someone provide assistance on how to export a flot chart to PDF?

Here is a Plunker example featuring the chart and a button handler for export.

For reference, here is my click handler:

<button type="button" class="btn btn-default btn-xs" ng-click="exportPdf($event)">Export to PDF</button>

$scope.exportPdf = function($event) {
  alert("Export to PDF click handler");
}

Answer №1

The answer may not be exactly what you are seeking. Flot is known for its speed and compatibility with low-end browsers, but it does have limitations when it comes to converting to image or PDF formats due to issues with legends being separate from the canvas element. However, you can export Flot charts as images without including the legend.

When it comes to PDF export, canvas elements cannot be directly converted to fully functional PDFs, but SVG graphics can. Since Flot relies solely on canvas, it can only be properly converted to images.

function canvas2Image() {
  var dataURL = document.querySelector("canvas").toDataURL();
  document.getElementById('my-img').src = dataURL;
}

If you need more robust export options, I suggest considering Highcharts, which offers a wide range of export capabilities. http://api.highcharts.com/highcharts#exporting.type

I have personally had a positive experience using Highcharts for a long time.

In addition to allenhwkim's method, there are alternatives for converting Flot into an image and then a PDF document.

Saving flot chart to image or pdf

Answer №3

When Flot generates its graph, it utilizes the HTML5 canvas element. Here's a potential step-by-step guide:

  1. Firstly, extract image data from the canvas using toDataURL method:

    var canvas = document.getElementById("mycanvas");

    var img = canvas.toDataURL("image/png");

  2. Next, leverage jsPDF to create a PDF document and utilize addImage method, similar to the initial example, to insert the image into the file.
