How can you display Unicode characters within an HTML input element with type=submit value?

I am having trouble displaying a right facing triangle character after the main text on a form button based on a designer mockup. The code snippet causing issues is as follows:

    <input type="submit" value="Add to basket &#9654;" />

The desired outcome is for it to look like 'Add to basket ▶' (if it renders in your browser).

Is there a way to achieve this, or am I missing something?

I am open to using a jQuery workaround as a temporary fix. Additionally, the page is HTML5 compliant, which might offer some insight.

Thank you in advance,

Ryan

Update: The responses provided below are correct, but I found an easier solution by simply copying the triangle symbol from this question and pasting it directly into my HTML editor. No encoding required.

Appreciate all the help.

Answer №1

Give this a shot:

<button type='submit'>Add to cart &#9654;</button>

With this code snippet, you can achieve the same outcome as using <input type='button'>, but with the added bonus of being able to include characters inside.

I trust this tip will be beneficial to you.

Answer №2

Absolutely, you are able to utilize 100% of the resources.

Just make sure of the following:

Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8

This information must be included in your content.

Please note that browsers will disregard the meta tag if the HTTP header is provided.

Additionally, confirm that your file is genuinely encoded as UTF-8 before sharing it by trying these steps:

Verify that your text editor saves it as UTF-8 format.

Make sure that your FTP or any other file transfer program does not alter the file in any way.

For more information on the topic, take a look at Alan Flavell's archived page FORM submission and i18n. Although it was created years ago, it is still considered relevant today.

To summarize: when submitting a form, it will be encoded in the same way as the HTML page it is on. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the HTML page has a suitable encoding.
