Implementing jQuery - I Require Sequential Execution of Functions

I have a unique scenario where I need to ensure that two jQuery functions run in sequence when a form is submitted. The first function performs an AJAX call to check the database for any duplicate values and returns a response. It is crucial that the second function does not start until the first one has completed its execution. Since JavaScript is inherently asynchronous and executes tasks concurrently, it's challenging to achieve this synchronicity. Is there any way to halt the execution of all other functions until the completion of the first function? In essence, my form currently gets submitted before the AJAX call checks for duplicate values in the database. Therefore, I require the first function to execute first for duplicate value validation, followed by the execution of the second function before submitting the form.

function checkForDuplicates(){
   ...perform AJAX call
}

function performValidation(){
  ...carry out validation process
}

$(function() {

    $("#MyForm").submit(function(){
        checkForDuplicates();
        performValidation();
        return false;
    })
})

Answer №1

When utilizing Jquery ajax, you have the option to execute the second function within the success block.

$("#MyForm").submit(function(){
      $.ajax({
    .
    .
    success:function(response) { f2(); }
    });
});

Answer №2

Incorporate the use of AJAX promise and deferred into your code by making the following adjustments in function f1:

function f1(){
   return $.ajax(/***/); //returning the deferred object
}
function f2(){
  ...
}

$(function() {
    $("#MyForm").submit(function(){
        f1()
        .then(f2);
        return false;
    })
})

If you're interested, I recommend reading more about promises on promisejs.org.

Answer №3

In the event of a successful ajax call in function1, simply invoke function2.

Here's an example of how you can define and use these two functions:

function function1(){
   ...ajax
   function2()
}
function function2(){
  ...
}

To execute the above code when the page loads, wrap it inside the following jQuery document ready function:

$(function() {
    $("#MyForm").submit(function(){
        function1();
        return false;
    });
});

Answer №4

Apologies for any misinterpretation.

function myFunction()
{
$.post('url','data',function(result){

anotherFunction();
})

}
function anotherFunction{

}
