Improve the functionality of select[multiple] to allow for single-click modifications without the need for CMD/CTRL

I am attempting to modify the default functionality of a select element so that clicking once on its options changes their selected state.

Essentially, I want to eliminate the confusing requirement of holding down shift/ctrl to select multiple options.

I am experimenting with jQuery:

jQuery('select[multiple] option').each(function() {

var $this = jQuery(this);

 if ($this.is(':selected')) {
   $this.click(function(e) {
        e.preventDefault();
        $this.selected = 'false';
   });
 } else {
   $this.click(function(e) {
        e.preventDefault();
        $this.selected = 'true';
   });
 }
});

Unfortunately, it does not seem to be working. Any suggestions?

Give this solution a try

Relying on the "click" event may not work as expected when dealing with selecting options in an HTML select element. It's important to use mouse-events to properly achieve the desired outcome.

UPDATE 2021:

The most effective approach is to utilize checkboxes

<input type="checkbox">
instead, as this allows browsers (both mobile and desktop) to handle the selection without the need for complex scripting workarounds.
