In Typescript, a function that is declared with a type other than 'void' or 'any' is required to have a return value

I'm a beginner in Angular2/Typescript and I am encountering an error while trying to compile my project:

An error is showing: A function that has a declared type other than 'void' or 'any' must return a value.

Here is the code snippet:

SyncCustomer(codCli: string): Observable<any>
{
    this.mdService.Ordini_Sincronizza(codCli).subscribe(
    data => {
      return Observable.of(data);
    },
    error => {
      console.log(error);
      return Observable.of(error);
    });
}

I can't seem to figure out where the problem lies...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE 001:

I made some changes to the code and now it compiles without any errors...

  SyncCustomer(codCli: string): Observable<any> {
    return Observable.of(this.mdService.Ordini_Sincronizza(codCli).subscribe(
      data => {
        return data;
      },
      error => {
        console.log(error);
        return error;
      }));
  }

Is it correct to return an observable of the subscribe function ???

Answer №1

When it comes to the callbacks return data/return error, they are specific to the two callbacks mentioned. Your method does not return anything for your initial code and a Subscription for the second one.

If you aim to return an Observable, avoid subscribing directly:

SyncCustomer(customerCode: string): Observable<any> {
  return Observable.of(this.customerDataService.syncOrders(customerCode));
}

I don't believe there is a need to subscribe in this instance. Subscribing is necessary for a cold Observable to start emitting, but it should be done where the data is needed (typically inside the component) or not at all within the component code, opting instead to subscribe in the template using the async pipe.
