Is it possible to insert an image directly into the <img> tag without having to first send it to the server?

I've created an upload form that allows users to submit images:

<form>
  <input accept="image/jpeg, image/gif, image/png" type="file" name="image" id="image" class="UploadInput" onchange="submitImageUploaderForm()"/>
</form>

Once the image is uploaded through this form, it is sent to the server. From there, I can send the image back to the browser and display it as a preview.

However, my goal is to achieve the following:

  1. Enable users to upload an image directly to their browser (bypassing the server)
  2. Process the image within the browser itself
  3. Send the processed image back to the server

Any suggestions on how I can accomplish this?

In order to utilize the File API, you must have a browser that does not support IE9. Unfortunately, this means no luck for users of IE9.
