Is it possible to set the input form to be read-only?

I need to create a "read-only" version of all my forms which contain multiple <input type="text"> fields. Instead of recoding each field individually, I'm looking for a more efficient solution. A suggestion was made to use the following:

<xsl:choose>
<xsl:when test="/..../permission = 'E'>
  <input ....>
</xsl:when>
<xsl:otherwise>
  ...
</xsl:otherwise>
</xsl:choose>

While this helps in making the fields partially read-only, it still allows pasting and deleting of content. A friend also recommended using the script below:

  $(function () {
        <xsl:if test="/.../permission != 'E'">
            $('input').keypress(function() { return false; });
        </xsl:if>
    });

This script prevents typing but does not stop paste or delete actions within the input fields. Any suggestions for achieving full read-only functionality would be greatly appreciated.

It appears that you are utilizing XSLT and outputting in an XHTML doctype, so why not simply add the disabled attribute to the input element you're generating?

<input type="..." disabled="disabled" />

You can easily implement this in XSLT. If you're reusing the same input in multiple places, consider creating a template for it and utilizing <xsl:apply-template .../> within your code.

It seems there is also a readonly attribute available. How interesting! :)

<input type="..." readonly="readonly" />

Answer №2

My approach has been straightforward:

       $(function () {
            <xsl:if test=".../permission != 'E'">
                $('input[type="text"').attr('readonly','readonly');
            </xsl:if>
        });

I am surprised that I had never come across the "readonly" attribute until now.

Answer №3

When it comes to readonly and disabled fields, there are subtle distinctions to be aware of. Readonly fields have their values submitted with a form, while disabled fields do not. Readonly elements can still be tabbed into, focused on, and selected, unlike disabled fields.

Another important point is that when directly manipulating values in JavaScript, you must use 'readOnly' for readonly fields even though HTML is case insensitive. Many libraries automatically handle this for you, making it one less thing to worry about.
