Is Jade monitoring *.jade files?

Though I am not sure of the internal workings of Jade, my best guess is that it compiles each template file once and then employs a compiled and cached version for subsequent HTTP requests.

One intriguing observation I have made while running my Express app is that changes to *.jade files become immediately visible in the browser without necessitating an app restart.

This leaves me wondering: How exactly does this happen?

  • Does Jade actively monitor the *.jade files within the /views folder?
  • Is Jade continuously checking the modified date during each HTTP request and recompiling the template as needed?
  • Could it be possible that Jade is actually compiling the HTML with every single HTTP request?

According to the documentation provided by Express at http://expressjs.com/api.html (located under 'settings')

view cache allows for view template compilation caching, which is enabled by default in production.

Therefore,

app.set('view cache', true);

...will activate caching. However, as mentioned in the documentation, caching is automatically turned on when the app is run with NODE_ENV=production, as it should be. If no specific environment is specified, Node defaults to 'development' wherein template caching is disabled.
