Is there a messaging app that provides real-time updates for when messages are posted?

I am in the process of developing a messaging application. User1 sends out a message, and I want to display how long ago this message was posted to other users - for example, "Posted 9 min. ago", similar to what we see on sites like SO or Facebook.

To achieve this, I have begun storing the time at which each message is posted along with the message content. My current plan involves using JavaScript on the client side to update the browser in real-time with the accurate post timing details.

Would you recommend proceeding with my current approach, or do you have a better solution in mind?

Take a look at signalR. It's exactly what you need. There's also Jabbr, which is a chat client built on top of signalR.

SignalR enables broadcasting, automatically determines server and client capabilities to optimize performance. It supports web sockets, long polling, forever frames, etc. If you need to scale across multiple servers, SignalR can utilize SQL Server and Redis as backend options.
