Is there a way to smoothly transition to the starting index of a LazyColumn when utilizing SnapFlingBehavior in Jetpack Compose?

Hey there, I've got a fascinating question to discuss about snapping in Compose development. With the introduction of snapping as a 1st class API for LazyColumn, replacing the Snapper library, a new query has emerged. How can one initialize the LazyColumn so that it smoothly snaps to a specific index/item instead of halting between two elements visually? Why won't it snap?

If you check out this link here, you'll see how easy and beneficial it is to implement snap fling behavior in your LazyColumns, especially for apps with long lists. This feature ensures that every time you scroll or fling the column, it will accurately snap to the nearest item at the center of the LazyColumn Widget. However, the issue lies in the lack of a snapToIndex method, and animateToScrollIndex doesn't seem Snap-friendly either, causing the animation to stop between elements. I've experimented with various approaches but haven't found a way to programmatically snap to an item index. Any suggestions on how we can resolve this core problem? Solving this could significantly enhance the usefulness of SnapFlingBehavior in the LazyColumn and LazyRow components, which are vital performance widgets in the framework.

Has anyone discovered a solution for controlling the snapped index programmatically?

/** Basic usage **/

    val listState = rememberLazyListState()

    val flingBehavior = rememberSnapFlingBehavior()

    LazyColumn(state = listState, flingBehavior = flingBehavior)

/** Example of methods not resulting in snapping to an index **/

    listState by rememberLazyListState(firstVisibleItemIndex: 5)
     listState.animateScrollTo(index: 10)

Answer №1

discovered that by making a call

listState.scroll{
    with(flingBehavior) {
      performFling(initialVelocity)
    }

}

Utilizing an initiated effect and inputting the state and fling behavior used to configure the LazyColumn will cause the column to appear on screen already aligned with an item. Just make sure to provide a non-zero value for the first visible item index when setting up your lazy list state.
