Issue encountered when trying to attach a hover event to the items in a comb

Currently, I am facing a specific situation. The requirement is to display a custom tooltip when the mouse hovers over the combobox items (specifically the "option" tag). Initially, my solution involved using the title tag. While this method worked effectively in Firefox, it proved to be problematic in IE as it would truncate the text if it was too long.

Subsequently, I devised a plan to utilize a div element as the tooltip and toggle its visibility as needed. After implementing the corresponding code, I observed that it functioned correctly in Firefox - triggering the enter and leave events. However, in IE, these events were unresponsive.

    $(document).ready(function () {
        var $tooltip = $("#tooltip").hide();
        var $options = $("#ddlSelect option");
        $options.each(function () {
            var texto = $(this).attr("title");
            $(this).data("title", texto);
            $(this).attr("title", "");
        });
        $options.hover(function () {
            var texto = $(this).data("title");
            if (texto != "")
                $tooltip.show().text(texto);
        }, function () {
            $tooltip.hide();
        });
    });

Note: In the provided code snippet, "tooltip" refers to a div element, while "ddlSelect" denotes a combobox containing multiple options. Each option within the combobox is assigned a title tag to serve as the initial container for the custom text.

I am currently using IE 8 and have encountered difficulties with event triggering. Can anyone shed light on why IE fails to register these events? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
