Master the art of managing filenames with JavaScript

Here is a piece of javascript code that I created:

fileName = "Report_" + Name + ".csv"
var hiddenElement = document.createElement('a');
hiddenElement.href = 'data:attachment/text,' + encodeURI(data);
hiddenElement.target = '_self';
hiddenElement.download = fileName;
window.open(hiddenElement.href, "My Report", "width=800, height=200", true);

However, the downloaded file name shows up as "download" instead of using the value of the fileName variable. Does anyone have any insights into what might be causing this issue?

Answer №1

In the realm of HTML 5, there exists a remarkable attribute known as 'a download' that grants you the power to bestow a new name upon a file.

<a download="newName.txt" href="originalFileName.txt">Feel free to click here to experience the wonders of downloading!</a>

Alternatively, one could opt for a server-side approach by configuring the Content-Disposition of the said file.

Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=funkyCustomName.txt

Answer №2

The server's "Content-Disposition" response header determines the file name.

To specify a desired file name, set the header as follows:

Content-Disposition:attachment;filename="desired_file_name.txt"

Note that although some browsers support the download attribute on anchor elements, Safari and IE currently lack this capability. For example:

<a href="Download_foo.csv" download="Download_bar.csv">Click to Download</a>
