Navigating in Vue.js using Ruby on Rails routes

I'm in the process of developing an application that utilizes a Ruby on Rails backend along with a Vue.js frontend. This application is designed as a single page app, and I am leveraging the webpacker gem to compile my main JS file.

After integrating vue-router and defining a few frontend routes, I have successfully implemented navigation using <router-link> to display the appropriate components. However, I am facing challenges in setting up my frontend routes to allow direct URL navigation without redirecting to my Rails routes.

Essentially, I want users to be able to navigate to URLs like /sample-route and access my Vue.js route directly, while still being able to send API calls to my Rails routes such as /api/users.

Answer №1

I managed to solve my issue by including

<router-view></router-vew>
in the main component of my Vue.js application.

Additionally, here is a snippet from my Rails routes file:

Rails.application.routes.draw do
  namespace :api do
    # Define API routes here
  end

  root 'application#index'
  get '/*path', to: 'application#index'
end

Answer №2

To incorporate your Vue routes into your Rails application, you can add them to the routes.rb file and direct them to your root Vue application route. For example, if Webpacker is rendering your JavaScript pack with controller#action vue_controller#app, and your Vue app router uses /user/profile, you would add a route in routes.rb like this:

get "/user/profile" => "vue_controller#app"

If manually defining each Vue route in routes.rb becomes cumbersome, consider implementing a universal fallback route that directs all requests to the Vue app controller action. As long as the route remains unchanged and responds with the appropriate Vue controller action, the Vue router will handle rendering the correct components when the page loads.

In Rails 4, you can refer to resources like the answers provided in this Stack Overflow question for guidance on setting up a "catch-all" route: Rails catch-all route.

EDIT: It's important to be aware that using a catch-all route may result in issues with 404 errors. If a user tries to access a non-existent route, the Rails app will still serve the Vue pack. To address this, you should include some unknown route handling in your Vue router to display a custom 404 page.

Answer №3

If you're looking for a different approach that can effectively manage sub-routes and utilize separate Vue apps for each page within a single Rails application, consider the following setup:

routes.rb

Rails.application.routes.draw do
    # Direct all page/* URLs to the index using this route entry
    get 'page_controller/*path', to: 'page_controller#index', format: false
end

It's also important to handle API and index routes separately based on your design choices.

vue-routes.js

const router = new VueRouter({
  mode: 'history',
  base: '/page_url',
  routes: [
    ...
  ]
});
