Operating a Selenium Grid with 100 Different Instances

Is there a way to optimize the performance of running automated tests with Protractor in parallel on 50 instances of Google Chrome using Selenium Grid? Currently, on an 8CPU machine with 16GB RAM, the machine becomes very slow and the load average exceeds 40.

If anyone has experience or suggestions on how to increase the number of Chrome instances on this machine without sacrificing performance, please share your insights. Thank you!
