Price and advantage in a single line of HTML code

Is there a valid reason for creating one-line HTML? Or is it better not to?

I understand that reducing file size is a benefit, but we also need to consider the cost on the server of adding functions to generate one line HTML. Additionally, making changes to code could be more difficult with one line HTML, leading to higher editing costs in the future.

Answer №1

It's not recommended to minify your HTML as it may not be worth the effort and time required for editing. Check out this helpful response.
However, optimizing your CSS is important. You can use a free tool called Scout, which automatically checks for changes in your css files and creates a minified version. It utilizes Sass to simplify CSS coding. Give it a try.

Answer №2

Creating HTML manually is not a common practice. In my case, the CMS I use caches its output as static files for quicker serving to users. Before caching, the following steps are taken:

The variable $tocache holds the page content to be displayed. After processing, it is written to disk. Apache then serves this static content instead of fetching data from the database and executing PHP code on subsequent visits.

// Removing white space
$tocache = str_replace(array("\n", "\t","\r")," ",$tocache);

// Eliminating unnecessary closing tags (although "</p>" could have been included)
$tocache = str_replace(array("</option>","</td>","</tr>","</th>","</dt>","</dd>","</li>","</body>","</html>"),"",$tocache);

// Removing single or double quotes around attributes without spaces
$tocache = preg_replace('/(href|src|id|class|name|type|rel|sizes|lang|title|itemtype|itemprop)=(\"|\')([^\"\'\`=<>\s]+)(\"|\')/i', '$1=$3', $tocache);

// Consolidating repeated white space into one space
$tocache = preg_replace('!\s+!', ' ', $tocache);

This process is executed once per page change to provide users with smaller HTML files.

Although somewhat redundant, I find value in it as gzip compression yields significant improvements. Additionally, optimizing CSS and JS using SASS's compressed option and uglifyJS results in a smaller file size for each.

By utilizing this method, each page consists of 1 HTML file, 1 CSS file, and 1 JS file, reducing HTTP requests and data transmission.

The combination of Gzip compression and consolidating CSS and JS files brings about the most substantial savings.
