Provide users with the option to select a specific destination for saving their file

In the midst of my spring MVC project, I find myself in need of implementing a file path chooser for users. The goal is to allow users to select a specific location where they can save their files, such as C:\testlocation\sublocation... Despite reading numerous posts claiming that this could be a security risk, I am determined to explore potential alternatives. Is there a workaround that exists to achieve this functionality?

Answer №1

It seems like you may be confusing two distinct functional requirements:

  1. Providing a download link that triggers the Save As dialog.
  2. Setting a default file location in the Save As dialog to streamline user experience (for example, suggesting "C:\foo\bar" instead of making users navigate through folders).

The first requirement can be easily achieved by sending the complete file in the HTTP response body and including the following header:

response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment;filename=\"filename.ext\"");

Unfortunately, as you have discovered, the second requirement is not feasible based on the information available.
