Receive fresh properties in React and subsequently reset state

I need some guidance on this issue:

  • My scenario involves a parent React component and its child.
  • The parent component contains a table, while the child has its own controls.
  • What I am trying to achieve is the ability to click on a cell within the parent's table and have that cell's value transferred to the child for editing by the user.

This is the approach I took:

  • I store the cell value in the parent's state when it is clicked.
  • Upon storing the value, a re-render occurs which sends the string to the child component through props.
  • The problem I am facing is that if there is any trigger causing a re-render in the parent, the current value will be sent to the child again, even if the child has already made changes to it.

To address this issue, my initial thought was to pass the prop down to the child and then have the child communicate back to the parent via a callback to clear the value from the parent's state. However, this resulted in a loop and did not work as intended.

What is the correct method of passing data down to a child component and ensuring it gets cleared after rendering?

Answer №1

Every time a React component updates, it triggers a re-render action. Additionally, if a child component receives new props, it will also need to re-render.

It's important to note that a child component should only re-render if the prop values have changed or if the inner component state has been updated.

In your specific case, I would recommend passing an object to the child component through props and then executing a function in the parent component from within the child. Simply pass the function from the parent to the child as a prop, and then call it within the child component when needed.

Answer №2

Parents should be responsible for modifying state that is passed down to children through props. For more information on this concept, check out the video 'react lifting state'

Class Component:

In a class component, it's important to declare your child's handlers (e.g. handleClick) in the parent component and pass them down to the child as an onHandler (e.g. onClick=this.onHandleClick). In the child component, you can reference these handlers using this.props.onClick

Functional Component:

Similarly, in a functional component, you should pass down handlers from the parent to the child but without using the this. reference.
