Refreshing content with Ajax when the back button is clicked

Hey everyone, I've been working on an ajax site and I'm having trouble getting the content to reload when the back button is clicked. I'm using Dynamic Drives ajax content script along with a script that changes the URL onclick and a popstate script for the back button functionality. The issue I'm facing is that the previous content in the div doesn't reload when navigating back. I've tried looking for solutions online, but most involve reloading the hash value which doesn't work since my links are javascript based. The onclick event replaces the URL fine, but the content remains the same when toggling between back and forward buttons. Any help on how to reload the original content would be greatly appreciated. Below is some code snippet I found online that works well, but doesn't solve the content reloading issue.

function updateHistory(){
var state = {
  "CanBeAnything": true
};
history.pushState(state, "Title", "/page.html");
expect(history.state).toEqual(state);}

$(window).bind('popstate', function() {
    $.ajax({url:location.pathname+'&rel=tab',success: function(data){
        $('#page-load-area').html(data);
    }});
});
