Steps to handle Angular's response to an HTTP 401 error

I am using nodejs (express) as a server side and angular 6 as the client. On the server, I have a middleware function that checks for a session. If the session is invalid or does not exist, I want to send a response to the client so it can handle it accordingly. My idea is to return a response code of 401 from the server and then create some kind of listener, route guard, or HttpInterceptor in the client to manage the situation (such as redirecting to the login page).

router.use('/', (req, res, next) =>
{
    if (!req.session.user)
    {
        res.status(401);
    }
    else{
        next();
    }
})

How can I capture or listen to this response in the angular app?

To enhance the security of your application, consider implementing an HttpInterceptor. This interceptor can monitor responses and log out a user if a 401 status is detected, redirecting them to the login page. The HttpInterceptor functions by intercepting all requests and responses, giving you the ability to perform specific actions such as checking for a 401 status code. It's important to note that the range for the interceptor is similar to how services operate; therefore, adding it to your top-level module will result in intercepting all requests and responses.

@Injectable()
export class AuthInterceptor implements HttpInterceptor {
    constructor(
       private authService: AuthService
    ) { }
    intercept(request: HttpRequest<any>, next: HttpHandler): Observable<HttpEvent<any>> {
        return next.handle(request).pipe(
            map((event: HttpEvent<any>) => event), // pass further response
            catchError((error: HttpErrorResponse) => {
                // handle errors from the response, specifically check for 401 status code
                if (error && error.status == 401)
                    // perform logout action e.g. this.authService.logout()
                return throwError(error);
            }));
    }
}

Ensure to include the interceptor in your app.httpmodule within the providers section:

providers: [
  {
    provide: HTTP_INTERCEPTORS,
    useClass: AuthInterceptor,
    multi: true
  },
]

When making http calls, there are typically two parameters that come into play.

For instance, if we have a service called api, the code snippet below showcases how to handle errors within the service:

To retrieve error messages within the service method:

 fetchData(){
  this._http.get(url).map((response: Response) => {
     return response.json();
   })
     .catch(this.handleError)
}

handleError(error: Response){
   console.log('The server returned the following error', error);
}

If you need to capture errors in the component instead:

 someFunction(){

    this._apiService.fetchData().subscribe((result) => {
         console.log('Success', result);
        // additional processing goes here
    }, (error) => {
        console.log('Error from the service', error);
        // additional processing goes here
     });
}
