The background color of the HTML element is not displaying properly in Internet Explorer 8

Currently, I am using the <body> tag to wrap three divs on a website where all background colors are set to white.

In the CSS, I have specified the background color as #fff for the html and body tags. The site displays correctly in every browser except for IE8:

I even attempted setting the style for html directly inline like this:

<html style="background-color: #fff">
, but it did not make any difference.

I am puzzled as to what could be causing this issue.

Answer №1

There seems to be an issue with a specific property in your CSS:

:focus{
  outline:0;
  background-color:#f2f3f6;
  border-color:#996
}

It appears that upon loading, IE8 mistakenly believes that the html element is in focus, while other browsers do not exhibit this behavior. By removing the background-color property in this section, the entire area will remain white.

Answer №2

What happens if you were to include the following code snippet in your HTML document?

body div
{
  background-color: white !important;
}

Typically, web browsers will apply the final CSS declaration they encounter for a specific element. For example, with

background-color: red; background-color: blue;
, the background color would display as blue.

Using !important instructs the browser to disregard any other property declarations. So, in the case of

background-color: red !important; background-color: blue;
, the background color will appear as red despite being instructed to be blue.

Answer №3

In my experience, using background:#FFFFFF; solved the issue effectively.

Answer №4

Internet Explorer now supports the use of 6-digit color codes, meaning you can use #ffffff instead of #fff for colors. Hopefully this clears up any confusion!
