The browser does not support the display of Spanish special characters

I am working on a website and need to incorporate support for the Spanish language. I have prepared an XML file with both English and Spanish text. The XML file is being read based on the user's selection of language from a dropdown menu. Everything seems to be functioning well, except that some Spanish characters are not displaying correctly in the browser.

Here is the content of the XML file:

<Spanish>
    <title></title>
    <loginBoxHeader1>Login Panel -</loginBoxHeader1>
    <loginBoxHeader2>Please provide the following credentials!</loginBoxHeader2>
    <username>Username:</username>
    <password>Password:</password>
    <LoginBtn>Log in</LoginBtn>
    <RememberCheckbox>Remember my username on this computer</RememberCheckbox>
</Spanish>

The characters ñ and ó are not showing up correctly in the browser. I have set the encoding of the XML file to ISO-8859-1 and added the following meta tag in the HTML page:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO 8859-1">

I have also experimented with UTF-8 encoding, but the issue persists. Any suggestions or insights?

Thank you.

Answer №1

Have you looked into using Google Fonts? http://www.google.com/fonts Click on "New to Google Fonts?" and simply follow the instructions provided. I selected option 1, specifically choosing "Normal 400", then followed the steps. Like yourself, I encountered a similar issue where my Spanish characters were displaying as black diamonds with question marks inside them.

Answer №2

Perhaps the font being used does not have the necessary special characters? I encountered a similar issue in the past and it turned out that the font lacked the symbols I needed. Switching to a different font resolved the problem.

Answer №3

Your page is currently decoded with utf-8 (although it should be in iso...), this could be due to the following reasons:

  • The page file itself is encoded in utf-8 (in which case meta tags are disregarded)
  • The www server content-type header is set to utf-8 (and should be updated to iso...)

Alternatively, you can save your XML file in utf-8 by using tools like notepad++

Answer №4

Just as @pawlakppp pointed out, it might be helpful to review the Encoding of your xml file. Here's a suggestion -

  • Launch the XML document in a text editor like NOTEPAD++.
  • Navigate to the 'Encoding' Menu.
  • Select either 'Encode using UTF-8' or 'Encode using UTF-8 without BOM'.
