`The steps to retrieve XML response data from an API request`

When using axios to make an API request, how can I receive data in XML format?

For example:

axios.get(/* URL */).then(response => {/* How do I retrieve the XML data? */}).catch(err => {/* result */});

Answer №1

When working in your .then callback, keep in mind that the response contains a property called data, which is essentially the xml document as a string. While many individuals opt to parse this string using a browser-integrated parser, an alternative approach was showcased in a recent question here: Reading local text file as XML

Instead of relying on built-in parsers, I recommend utilizing specialized parser libraries for more efficient xml data manipulation. Personally, I prefer using txml. You can easily include this library in your document using the following script:

<script src="https://unpkg.com/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="90e4e8fdfcd0a4bea0bea0">[email protected]</a>/tXml.min.js"></script>

Once you have integrated txml, parsing the xml string can be done as shown below:

axios.get(/* URL */).then(response => {
   const dom = txml.parse(response.data);
}).catch(err => {/* result */});

The resulting constant dom will be an array of xml nodes. Each node includes properties such as tagName, attributes, and children, with children being another array of nodes.

Furthermore, the txml library offers useful helper functions like 'txml.simplify(dom)', which transforms the data into a more structured object format. For additional details, refer to the API documentation on npm.
