Tips for accessing the names of subdirectories and files on a website

If we have the URL, is it possible to access the names of the files within the parent directory? Similar to how we can do in DOS by using the command "DIR" to view the list of files inside a folder.

For example, if we have a URL like , I am curious to know what files and folders are present within ahilam.com such as , , and so on...

It may seem like a trivial question, but I am genuinely interested to find out if this is indeed possible.

Answer №1

It is typically not feasible: HTTP does not come equipped with a built-in directory listing feature.

Apache offers the DirectoryListing directive which generates a formatted HTML list of files in a directory, but this function is commonly disabled.

Your best option is to scan the main page URL for any links. However, there is no guarantee that you will be able to capture all available files using this method.

Answer №2

Achieving this is definitely possible. What you're looking to do is called web directory traversal, a common vulnerability that webmasters are usually aware of and take measures to prevent with 403-Forbidden or 404-Not Found errors. Manual exploitation of this vulnerability is feasible, but for automation purposes, leveraging Python or Perl can make the task easier. I am currently working on a similar project with the goal of accomplishing the same objective using PHP and cURL. Unfortunately, I don't have any source code to share at the moment, but I plan on posting it in the future.

Answer №3

When accessing a directory directly, the browsing functions offered by various web servers differ. Some servers may even disable this feature altogether. Therefore, the simple answer is: it is not achievable.
