Tips for decreasing the height of Material UI's Autocomplete component?

Looking for assistance in decreasing the height of the Material UI Autocomplete component. I've attempted to set the height property to 10 or 20 px using the classes property, but it hasn't had any effect. I also tried reducing the height of the Textfield enclosed by the Autocomplete component, but when I attempted to do this through InputProps, the suggested Items in the Autocomplete area stopped displaying.

Answer №1

I am currently customizing the Autocomplete feature.

To decrease the height, I have utilized the size attribute and omitted the label attribute.

renderInput={(params) => <TextField {...params} variant="standard" size="small" />}

It is important not to overwrite the provided params from the Autocomplete component on the TextField component, as they already include elements like InputProps.

If you desire more customization options, consider using Autocomplete's CSS API. For instance,

const useStyles = makeStyles(theme => ({
  inputRoot: {
    color: theme.palette.primary.contrastText,
  },
  popupIndicator: {
    color: theme.palette.primary.contrastText,
  },
  root: {
    padding: `0 ${theme.spacing(1)}px`,
  },
}))

const AutocompleteWrapper = ({
  value,
  onChange,
  options,
}) => {
  const classes = useStyles()

  return (
  <Autocomplete
    classes={classes}
    options={options}
    value={value}
    onChange={onChange}
    renderInput={(params) => <TextField {...params} variant="standard" size="small" />}
  />
  )
}

Answer №2

Implement ListboxProps for customization:

For Example

<Autocomplete
  fullWidth
  disableClearable
  ListboxProps={{ style: { maxHeight: 150 } }}
  ...
/>

Answer №3

Adjust the input height using CSS

.MuiInputBase-input {
  height: 1.5rem;
}

Ensure that if there are nested tags, their height is also set to prevent container height increase

Answer №4

Perhaps a more efficient way to handle this (depending on your specific needs) would be to set a restriction on the number of tags for autocomplete functionality

    <Autocomplete
      multiple

      limitTags={2}   <-- THIS

      id="multiple-limit-tags"
      options={top100Films}
      getOptionLabel={(option) => option.title}
      defaultValue={[top100Films[13], top100Films[12], top100Films[11]]}
      renderInput={(params) => (
        <TextField {...params} label="limitTags" placeholder="Favorites" />
      )}
    />

Answer №5

I totally concur with @H.Hattab's perspective. If you are utilizing styled-components then here is a practical example for reference:

const CustomAutoComplete = styled(Autocomplete)`
  & .MuiInputBase-input {
    height: 1.5rem;
  }
`;
