Tips for transferring PHP variable from a drop down menu

Hello, I am currently working on creating a dropdown menu using the <select> tag. My goal is to have it so that when someone clicks on one of the options in the dropdown, a new window opens. Additionally, I want the PHP variable from the main page to be passed to this new window at the same time.

Can anyone point out any mistakes in my code? Here's what I have so far:

    <div class='fieldgroup'>
        <label for=@label>@label</label>
        <select name="@label" title="Select Option" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand; text-align:center; font-weight:bold; float: left; margin: 10px 0px 0px 0px; height: 25px;">
            <option>@option1</option>
            <option <a href="#" onclick="window.open('@newwindow.php?@value=<?$@value?>','newWindow','width=800,height=600,left=150,top=200,toolbar=no,addressbar=yes,resizable=false');"></a>>@option2</option>
            <option>@optin3</option>
            <option>@optin3</option>
            <option>@option4</option>
         </select>
   </div>

Answer №1

Focus on the true nature of the issue: A HTML/Javascript challenge. There's no PHP involved here. Take it step by step:

  • Start by creating a basic select element in your HTML.
  • Next, tackle the task of opening a new window - you've almost got that down pat.
  • Then familiarize yourself with jQuery. It will greatly streamline and enhance your Javascript development moving forward.
  • Figure out how to trigger an action when the selected value changes. (Hint)
  • After that (perhaps in a separate example), learn how to retrieve an attribute when the select option is changed. (Hint)
  • Once you've mastered these steps, combine them all together, dynamically generate your HTML code using PHP, and you're good to go.

By following this process, you'll gain valuable insights into how different components interact across various realms (HTML, Javascript, PHP).

It is not recommended to include an A tag within an option element. Here is a suggested alternative:

<select onChange=" window.open('yoururl.php?value=' + this.options[this.selectedIndex]);">
