Tips on Importing a Javascript Module from an external javascript file into an <script> tag within an HTML file

I'm facing an issue while attempting to import the 'JSZip' module from an external node package called JSZip in my HTML File.

The usual method of importing it directly using the import command is not working:

<script>

     import JSZip from '../node_modules/jszip/dist/jszip.min.js';

</script>

I also attempted to import it in the HTML file within a script tag:

<script type="text/javascript" src="node_modules/jszip/dist/jszip.min.js"></script>

Unfortunately, neither of the above methods seem to be successful in importing the module.

I understand that this can be easily accomplished by directly modifying a JavaScript file, but I am restricted to editing the ui.html file for a figma plugin. This constraint arises because certain browser APIs can only be accessed on the html side, with js files running in a separate sandbox environment.

To learn more about figma plugin's ui and js files, you can refer to this resource.

Thank you in advance for any assistance :)

Answer №1

To incorporate the module, you can utilize

<script type="module">
(refer to the compatibility chart)...

Alternatively, for compatibility with older browsers like IE, consider using Babel or a similar tool to compile all your JavaScript code into a single, minified, and ES5-compatible (old JavaScript) file.

Answer №2

To make it work, simply include type="module" in the script tag.

<script type="module">
     import JSZip from '../node_modules/jszip/dist/jszip.min.js';
</script>

For optimal performance in this scenario, it is recommended to utilize webpack. By doing so, you can take advantage of JavaScript imports and create compact modules for your code. When it comes time to run the code, webpack will merge everything into a single JavaScript file.

Ensure that you have a package.json file with

"type": "module"
, allowing you to import other JavaScript files in your code using import Foo from './Foo.js', while employing export default { } in the JS files.

// package.json file

{
  "type": "module"
}

// index.js file

import Foo from './Foo.js'

Foo.start()

// Foo.js file

export default {
  start () {
    console.log('start')
  }
}

// webpack.config.cjs file

return {
  target: 'web',
  entry: './index.js',
  output: './script.js'
}
<script src="script.js"></script>
