Unable to install react-dom/test-utils using npm

I recently included two libraries in my package.json

  "devDependencies": {
    ...
    "react-dom/test-utils": "*",
    "react-test-renderer/shallow": "*"
  },

These were recommended by the React documentation to align with version 16 of the React ecosystem.

Upon executing npm install --verbose, I encountered the following issue:

18 verbose node v8.5.0
19 verbose npm  v5.3.0
20 error code EINVALIDPACKAGENAME
21 error Invalid package name "react-dom/test-utils": name can only contain URL-friendly characters
22 verbose exit [ 1, true ]

Additionally, attempting to install it as a devDependency via the command line interface resulted in this error message:

npm ERR! Error while executing:
npm ERR! /usr/bin/git ls-remote -h -t ssh://<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="e6818f92a6818f928e9384c885898b">[email protected]</a>/react-dom/test-utils.git

How can I resolve this issue to ensure these packages are accessible for referencing in the code?

Answer №1

To include react-dom in your project, use the command: npm install --save react-dom

Importing react-dom/test-utils indicates that you are importing from the test-utils directory/file within the react-dom package.
