Understanding the behavior of the enter key in Angular and Material forms

When creating forms in my MEAN application, I include the following code:

<form novalidate [formGroup]="thesisForm"
  enctype="multipart/form-data"
  (keydown.enter)="$event.preventDefault()" (keydown.shift.enter)="$event.preventDefault()">

I do this to prevent accidental form submissions when users press enter unintentionally. However, this causes issues with text areas not responding to the enter key and preventing me from adding line breaks. While I can manually add new lines by copying and pasting text, I am unable to do so by simply pressing enter. How can I resolve this problem and allow normal use of text areas?

Answer №1

To prevent form submission when hitting enter, you can use preventDefault() on the form element and then add

(keydown.enter)=" $event.stopPropagation()"
to a specific element like a textarea. This configuration will ensure that pressing enter in the textarea will not trigger a submit action but will instead create a new line in multi-line inputs.
