Using JavaScript drag and drop feature to remove the dragged element after a successful drop operation

Trying to figure out how to remove a dragged element from the DOM after a successful drop using the native JavaScript drag and drop API.

  • After attempting to listen for the drop event, it seems that it only fires on the element being dropped onto and does not provide a reference to the dragged element.
  • Also tried listening for the dragend event, but it doesn't indicate whether the drop was successful or not.
  • Looking for a solution without saving the dragged element in a global variable to avoid issues when dragging between tabs or browsers.

Check out an example here: http://jsfiddle.net/KNG6n/3/

A scenario where letters can be dragged into a box and upon dropping, the letter should be removed from the list without affecting other instances of the same letter in the list items.

Answer №1

To ensure proper handling of dragged elements, it is crucial to listen for the dragend event and verify the dropEffect variable of the dataTransfer object before proceeding:

elementHTML.addEventListener('dragend', function(e){
    if(e.dataTransfer.dropEffect !== 'none'){
        $(this).remove();
    }
});

Answer №2

Don't forget to check out this demo as well:

var element = document.getElementById(e.dataTransfer.getData('Text'));

element.parentNode.removeChild(element);

Answer №4

Obtain the position where an element is dropped during the dragend event. Check if there is a droppable element at that specific location.

To determine this, utilize the method document.elementFromPoint(x, y);
