Using Moment.js to showcase historical information within a specified timeframe based on the user's timezone

I'm finding it challenging to properly handle historical data display:

Current Situation:

  • The database contains records stored in "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" format in UTC+0 (MariaDB - DateTime type)
  • A web application (using moment.js) allows users to select a date range without time of day

What I Require:

  • To retrieve records within the selected range while considering the user's current timezone (for instance, if a user selects 23 March, and there is a record from 22 March in the DB, but in the user's local timezone, it was already 23 March, the user should still see that record)
  • To handle daylight saving time accurately
  • To display dates in result records in the correct local time of the user at that specific moment in the past

I am seeking guidance on the necessary steps to achieve all of these requirements. Thank you!

Answer №1

To begin, establish two variables within your client-side code:

var startDate = moment().startOf('day').utc().format();
var endDate = moment().add(1, 'day').startOf('day').utc().format();

With these variables set, you now have the specified time range in UTC for your query. Send this data to the server through a form post or any other suitable method before executing the query.

When executing the query, utilize a half-open range condition:

recordTime >= startDate AND recordTime < endDate

Upon receiving the results back on the client side, they will be in UTC format. To convert them to local time, use the following approach:

moment.utc(retrievedData).local().format()

You can customize the input/output formats as needed for your specific requirements.

Answer №2

To optimize for future instances, consider storing data in the TIMESTAMP format rather than using DATETIME.

When data is stored in a TIMESTAMP, it automatically converts the date and time to UTC based on the client's timezone for storage purposes. When retrieving the data with a subsequent SELECT, it will be converted back to the reader's timezone.

This approach eliminates the need for additional coding to achieve the desired outcome (in my perspective).
